Fundamentals and applications of statistical physics
Statistical physics bridges the gap between macroscopic and microscopic worlds, which originated in attempts to explain how the irreversible macroscopic behaviors can be reconciled with the reversible microscopic Hamiltonian equations of motion, in other words, why the entropy increases and how the direction of time arrow becomes certain. Statistical physics aims at a fundamental understanding of how the ...

Like-charge attractions
Minryeong and Sunghan published a collaborative work on like-charge interactions mediated by rodlike counterions as equally-contributed first authors in Phys. Rev. Lett.

Shape of ion does matter
A theoretical study using statistical field theory and extensive Monte Carlo simulations predicts the existence of like-charge attraction in the presence of rodlike counterions, surprisingly enough, even in the mean-field regime where it has been known for more than hundred years that no attractions occur.

Random target searching
Random target searching for multiple searchers is non-trivial even for non-interacting searchers because of its fundamental statistical nature arising from the order statistics. We are interested in extending this problem to much more complicated but important case such as interacting searchers.

Quantum measurement engine
According to the second law of thermodynamics, heat engines operating at a single-temperature are impossible. Prof. Yi and Prof. Kim, however, proposed a quantum engine that operates at a single temperature. In sharp contrast to information heat engines such as a Szilard engine, a feedback control is not required.
